Evidence seems to show that the Fitzgerald desperately tried to run for cover but ran out of time. When the Witch came to get them, it pushed them way off course and towards the island's rocky underwater outcrops. In perfect weather at low speed it would have been tight. With massive swells and Superior at a her full? rage they stood no chance, it broke the Fitzgerald's back, it went down in 2 3 minutes. Possible less than a minute... There was no hope for the poor souls aboard...

Anyone that is familiar with Lake Superior knows it's not a lake, it's an inland sea. She has a vicious temper, and any sailor can get themselves in a great deal of trouble very quickly when she get's mad. It can happen? in 10 minutes or less...

I was just a kid when she sank. I still rember Walter Cronkite doing the news. He made a coment about another? ship had just docked and they asked the capt. to go out and look for her. He said only if all my crew agrees will I endanger their lives. ALL men aboard agreed to return to the rough waters and look for her. Very touching!

We all felt so bad ...
We all felt so bad for this crew and the families who were left to endure this nightmare. Every time I remember, my heart still feels heavy and I say a? little prayer for them. If there was any good to come of this, I hope it taught the freight companies to be more cautious with these unpredictable weather patterns.

I've known this ...
I've known this song since it first came out. But it just isn't a very good song. There's barely a tune & most of the lyrics don't rhyme. It's mostly just the haunting story. Still, nice job on the post zeezy. ?

Fitz was goin' through Saulte St. Marie while our scout troop watched through the long scopes over locks. Us bein' kids pretended the scopes were cannon and? pretendin' firin' at the Fitz; when this song came out I couldn't sleep for days afterwards.

This song has always given me the creeps. Perhaps it's the fear of dark water. It paints a pretty vivid mental portrait of those wave washing over the decks and the boat in immenent trouble and the knowledge of the crew that? survvival was unlikely. How can you not feel sympathy? A great song nonetheless.
